The verdict

It's Nirvana. Pearl Jam had the career; Nirvana had the moment.

Pearl Jam is the better story of a band: principled, durable, loyal, and still making their fans happy three decades later. Ten is also, song for song, a match for Nevermind, and more Americans bought it.

But Nirvana is the reason any of this happened. Nevermind flipped the culture in one month, Cobain's writing is the most imitated of the decade, and Unplugged is a document. Three albums that still sound like the future. Nirvana.
