Messi or Ronaldo?

The two best players of their era, and probably of any era, played the same fifteen years in the same league. There is no cleaner comparison in sport, and no angrier one.

The verdict

It's Messi. Ronaldo built the record; Messi played the game.

Ronaldo's argument is the one you can count: more goals than anyone ever, more Champions Leagues, more countries conquered. It's a monumental career and it deserves the respect it demands.

But Messi does more things on a pitch than any footballer who has lived, and the sport's own voters have said so eight times. The World Cup in 2022 closed the last door Ronaldo could have pointed at. Messi, clearly, with Ronaldo as the greatest second-best in the history of the game.
